R; 96 min. Written by Charles Edward Pogue; based on a screenplay by Russell Rouse and Clarence Greene. Directed by Rocky Morton and Annabeljankel. Starring Dennis Quaid, Meg Ryan, Daniel Stern, Charlotte Rampling. (Walt Disney Home Video)

Professor Dexter Cornell (Quaid) goes to the police to report a murder-his own. Someone has poisoned Dexter, and he's got just 24 hours to figure out whodunit. That's not the only mystery in Dexter's life, however, since one of his most promising students, Nick Lang (Robert Knepper), just jumped off the roof of a building after asking Dexter to read his first novel. Was Nick having an affair with Dexter's soon-to-be-ex-wife Gail (Jane Kaczmarek)? Was Nick also involved with Cookie Fitzwaring (Robin Johnson), even though Cookie's mother (Rampling) had adopted Nick and was putting him through college? And why has Dexter's young student Sydney (Ryan) waited until the end of the semester to get flirty with her prof?

A remake of the gritty i95o B-movie of the same name (which isn't a Christmas movie), D.O.A. embraces the shadowy world of film noir, despite being shot in color and set in sunny Austin, Tex. Even with the holidays just around the corner, everyone's sweating up a storm, adding to the tension and claustrophobia of this ultimate ticking-clock thriller. The eggnog and tinsel are among the many incongruous ingredients of this crafty mystery, visually styled to a fare-thee-well by directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, previously known for their music videos and the i98os Max Headroom TV series. Quaid, as a washed-up novelist who hides his writer's block behind a facade of cynicism and bitterness, makes a perfect noir narrator, and his chemistry with Ryan-whom he would marry three years later-feels as tangible as the Texas humidity. And Rampling, naturally, was born to play the role of a femme fatale with a dark secret in her past. D.O.A. wasn't a big hit, but its a stylish and entertaining nail-biter. (It also features one of the corniest Christmas-related riddles ever told, but you'll have to hear it for yourself.)
